Most weekend Golfers hit a fade naturally or its ugly sister the slice. The fade is a higher hit shot than the draw and doesn’t run far when it lands. It’s the perfect shot to play into the heart of a green because it stops quickly and lands softly.

Lee Trevino was the master of the fade shot and he once said he can make the ball hit the green like a butterfly with sore feet. The one thing that should be remembered with this shot is that it will cost you a bit of distance. So you should remember to go up one or two clubs to make up for the loss.

To set up for the fade, I would first keep my stance open, by this I mean that your feet hips and shoulders should all be aiming slightly to the left of your target. With this stance it will encourage an out to in swing path for the club head. This will in turn create a clockwise spin on the golf ball.

You should next set up and adjust your grip. At this point take a look at how you normally grip the club. If you tend to hook the ball, the chances are that you have a strong grip i.e. your hands are turned to the right of the grip and you can see three knuckles of your left hand.

For the fade shot it is required that you use a weaker grip where the left hand is turned slightly to the left on the golf grip. If you already slice the ball you may not need to move your grip so much. Just aiming your body left of target might just be enough for this shot.

The final part of the set up is the ball position relative to where you would normally play it. I you normally hit a straight ball you should place the ball about one ball width further forward in your stance. This will allow you to hit the fade with a bit more height on the ball.

So the key points to hitting the fade are to set up with your body aligned slightly left of target with the club aligned to the target. Your grip should be weaker or turned slightly to the left on the grip. The ball position should be brought slightly forward in your stance.

Being able to fade the ball is quite useful in a variety of situations and it is essential if you ever want to improve your game.

Being able to manoeuvre the golf ball and shape the golf draw shot is often classed as being an advanced technique. However with the correct set up there are only two factors which dictate how the golf ball will fly.

The two factors are club face alignment and the swing path at impact. Having an understanding of these principles should make it easier for you to shape the golf draw shot.

The draw can be a useful shot to use especially in windy conditions. The ball tends to fly lower and when it lands it runs a lot longer on the fairway.

At set up the club face should be aimed at the target, your feet, hips and shoulders should be aligned slightly to the right of the target. Please note that consideration should be made for club selection as the ball will run further than normal with this type of shot.

The left hand grip required should be strengthened just a fraction, i.e. by twisting the left hand clockwise. When looking down at your left hand on the club you should be able to see at least three knuckles rather than the normal two.

During the backswing concentrate on initiating a good turn. At the top the club should be pointing to the right of the target by the amount that your body was aimed and also by the amount you intend to shape your shot.

When you swing down at the ball, attack the ball from inside of the line. The club face should be aiming at the target; however the club face will look closed in relation to your stance. It is this setup that imparts the necessary side spin on the ball for this shot.

Because the draw shot is more of a feel type shot it is better to start practicing this shot with a six or seven iron. You will also find that by the very design of the irons it is a lot easier to draw the ball with these clubs. It is a little bit more difficult to execute with fairway woods.

Many of the world’s top players use the draw shot to give them the added control to their game. With some practice this is a handy shot to master and especially good if mastered with the driver.

Do you often lose your balance in your golf swing? If you do, here’s what you can do about it.

First of all, you need to understand that the way you setup to the golf ball dictates to a large degree the balance that you’ll have during your golf swing. And so here is how to achieve a balanced posture position from which to start your golf swing.

1st.

Stand up straight with your feet about shoulder width apart, then

2nd.

Take the straightness out of your knees, then…

3rd.

Place a club along your spine, and then

4th.

Bend forward making sure that your spine remains straight. It’s very important when doing this golf drill that your backside moves back as this helps to create a balanced golf posture position. You want your weight to be on the balls of your feet when you’re setup and it won’t be unless you follow the steps I’ve suggested.

And finally…..

5th.

Once you’ve bent over (by moving your backside back and keeping your back straight) the next step is to move your left hip (right hip for lefties) slightly towards your target. When you do this it automatically positions your head behind the ball, which is just where you want it.

Once in this golf posture position you can place a club on the ground in a position to hit a ball, and you probably will have to either bend over more or stand up straighter depending on what club you are using. For example, when you’re using a wedge you’ll have to bend over more than you would for a driver because a wedge is quite a bit shorter than a driver is.

Then once you’ve done this exercise and you’re setup then get someone to lightly push on both shoulders from behind and in front. Because doing this will help you to set your weight to the insides of both feet which is where the weight should be. Then get your partner to push lightly on your back and if you fall over it’s because your weight is too far forward, so set your weight more back on the balls of your feet.

When you’re in balance you’ll find that when someone gives you a slight push you’ll be steady as a rock, and this should be your aim. So do the posture exercise and test yourself until you pass. When you do, your balance will be a lot better during your golf swing.

It takes a reasonable amount of physical skill to propel a golf ball 300 yards or more. Not very many average weekend golfers have that kind of skill. But it takes even more skill to take basically the same mindset you have with the driver in your hand and slow it down to control a three foot putt.

But, you say, a three foot putt is much easier to hit than a 300 yard drive. It can’t possibly be harder than hitting a driver.

The difference is simple. When you are swinging a driver, the forces of momentum assist at first, and then take over the swing entirely. At the moment of impact you have no control whatsoever over the swing you have initiated.

In the long game, you must be in the right position when you do finally lose control. The longer you can maintain control before momentum takes over, the better a player you will become.

In short putting, you don’t have the momentum to help you. You stay in control the whole way. And to compound the matter, you don’t have 40 yards of fairway or 5,000 square feet of green to be successful in hitting. You have 4.25 inches of hole.

Putting ain’t golf in slow motion. You don’t have the luxury of momentum to keep you from yanking the club head off line on the down stroke. The only way to putt successfully for the average guy is to forget about the technical aspect of the stroke and treat putting like any other game where the object is to hit a specific target as opposed to a general area.

Golf and short putting are so different they shouldn’t even be a part of the same game. If Ben Hogan had his way you wouldn’t have to putt at all. If the greatest ball striker that ever lived couldn’t putt, how different must the two really be?
