If you are a beginner golfer just starting out you will need some basic lessons. You will first need to find someone who can show you the basics, such as a golf instructor. Aligning your club up to your target properly will help you to get an easier more accurate swing. It is important to remember when chipping one of the most important parts of the swing is getting underneath the ball with just enough force to get it into the air. You do not want to use too much strength unless your ball is buried halfway into the sand.

There is really no right or wrong way to swing a golf club. Just so you are comfortable with the way that you do it. With everybody having a different body structure the way they play golf will be their own style and different from someone else’s. You can still learn the basics of playing and just play your own way. The main thing is to put the ball in the hole and however it works for you is the right way.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do line up the ball with the hole every time. Use the brand name or even a marked ball to line up with. Do play more break on fast greens, the ball will take shorter time to get to the same point so make allowances for this. This also applies to playing along slopes. Vice versa for slow greens, take this into account when you are reading the green. If it is a new course, watch how it affects other players. Do concentrate on the right speed before worrying about the right line, a putt that is slightly off line still has a chance of dropping in when the speed is right. Even if it is a foot off-line you will still have a tap in whereas if the speed is wrong you may still have difficult second putt. Do play more break on downhill putts and less on uphill putts. As above. Do make your short putts easier, like chess try forward planning, try to hit your long putts to the easiest place from which to make your second putt. Do take the final ‘gimme’ putt, don’t pick your ball up when it is near the hole and assume you putted it. It will build your confidence and technique to ‘know’ you did it. Do be positive, putting is a mental game especially short putts, if you think it won’t go in it invariably won’t. Do try practice putting with your eyes closed, it amazing how it works without the eyes confusing matters. Don’t stop upon contact with the ball, keep your stroke power consistent when following through the shot. Try to take your backswing at the same speed you wish to hit it and continue through. Don’t practice on bad greens it will only dent your confidence. Don’t change your mind mid shot, be committed, a doubtful strike will never go where you want.

Being properly outfitted and knowing the golfing terms associated with golf will help give your confidence on your very first day on the golf course!

Never underestimate the power of dressing correctly for any activity where you wish to excel. Sure you can go to the course dressed in jeans and a decorated tee shirt and you can also feel totally out of place, which is not good for your score. You can also adapt the “I don’t give a damn” attitude as well, but you will probably always be a beginner golfer.

It’s not too hard to be perceived as an “experienced” golfer, just wear a nice pair of khakis and a knit shirt with a collar. Okay we know Tiger can get away with a shirt with no collar, but you’re not exactly in that category of golfer – yet. Plus don’t forget the proper golf shoes and today that usually means ones without cleats (many golf courses only permit shoes without cleats). If you are just into your first attempts at playing golf you can usually rent shoes and clubs for that matter and not make a huge initial investment. Once you find you love the game – then start shopping.

Many municipal courses do not have a dress code for golf, but why not dress the part right from the start? Golf started as a “gentlemen’s” game and still is considered such. There are golf rules and golfing terms you will want to learn as well, and proper clothing goes right along with the whole game of golf.

Many beginner golfers first try golf on their vacation, which may be at some resort with a golf course you have heard or read about, but your khakis and knit shirt will do just fine even there.

Ah! And let’s not forget the ladies. Ladies golf dress code is similar to the men’s, inasmuch as you must have a collar on your shirt and the old, old rule of shorts at least 3 dollar bills in length. Of course we usually don’t worry too much about how the gals will dress as they have probably boned up on it and have already bought a substantial golf wardrobe.

And don’t think dress codes are different for golfing spots around the world. Probably the U.S.A. is the most lax, but they all require the minimum of what we mentioned above.
